The buzzard is the most common bird of prey in Denmark. Over 5000 pairs breed in Denmark and stay in the country all year round. During the birds' winter migration, thousands of buzzards pass through the country. 

Seen from the road

The buzzard is widespread throughout the country, but it is most often seen in open landscapes. Here it is either hovering over the area or sitting completely still, at the top of a pole or up in a tree, waiting for its prey to approach.

Buzzards feed mainly on rodents and other small animals. Both small birds, reptiles, amphibians and large insects and worms. The buzzards are especially seen in areas with wild nature, where their prey roams. The buzzard is therefore often seen sitting on roadsides and in rural areas further away from the cities. 

A multitude of shades

Buzzards vary greatly in their appearance. It can vary from a very light to a completely dark plumage, however, the dark brown buzzard is the most common. Typically, the underside of the wings is significantly lighter than the top. The buzzard is strongly built, with a broad head and a typical curved bird of prey beak.
