South and west of Frederikshavn, an impressive hilly landscape unfolds, a testament to the mighty forces of the last Ice Age.

Here you will find, among other things, Gærum Bakker, which is not a specific place but rather a characteristic of the area around Gærum. The area offers a hilly terrain with many beautiful views. Gærum Bakker cuts through the landscape from Øksnebjerg in the east to the Vildfred hills near Gærum, to Kig Ud and Guddalen to the north.

Vendsyssel's second highest point

Kig Ud is a point you almost have to experience. With its 122 meters, Kig Ud is Vendsyssel's second highest point, and the view from the top is among the most stunning in Vendsyssel.

From Kig Ud, you have a 360-degree view of the entire area, from Skagen in the north, Sæby in the east, and Jyske Ås to the south. To the west, you can sense the area's very hilly landscape. Forests, towns, fields, and in some places, some of the many burial mounds in the area. A trip to Kig Ud around sunset is recommended, as the view makes the experience truly special.

Nature trails bring you up close to the stunning nature

In 2008, the residents of Gærum decided that the beautiful nature surrounding the town should be more accessible to everyone, both the residents of the town and people from outside who simply wish to experience nature.

Today, there are five marked hiking routes around Gærum. The shortest route is 2 km, while the longest is 10 km.

All the routes share the fact that they take you through the hilly landscape, enriched with cultural-historical passages and landmarks along the way. On the routes, you will have the opportunity to pass Vendsyssel's second highest point, forests, valleys, open plains, a church, a memorial from World War II, and Vendsyssel's only preserved giant's grave.
